Wotan’s Daughter recounts the turbulent life and career of Marjorie Lawrence, one of Australia’s most renowned opera stars. From humble beginnings in rural Victoria, Lawrence rose to become one of the pre-eminent Wagner singers of her generation, acclaimed and honoured in Europe and at the Metropolitan Opera in New York where she shared roles with the legendary Kirsten Flagstad.
Stricken by polio at the height of her career, Lawrence fought back courageously against physical disability and prejudice to rebuild her shattered life and return to the stage. This is a book for all music lovers and those who value an inspiring story of triumph over adversity.

Marjorie Lawrence: The World At Her Feet
Marjorie grew up in Winchelsea in country Victoria, Australia, dreaming of becoming an opera star like Dame Nellie Melba. In 1928 she went to Paris to study opera without knowing a word of French and having never heard of Richard Wagner.
In 1941, at the height her success, she was tragically cut down by polio and became completely paralysed. With the help of Australian nurse, Sister Kenny, Marjorie regained movement in her upper body and resumed her career in a wheelchair. In 1955, MGM made a movie of her life, “Interrupted Melody”, starring Eleanor Parker and Glenn Ford, which won an Academy Award.
Remarkably, she became the greatest Wagnerian soprano of her era, gracing the opera theatres of urban and regional France, before being lured to the USA to sing at the Met. She became friends with President Roosevelt and performed”The Star-Spangled Banner” at his fourth inauguration. The Queen invited her to sing at Buckingham Palace and the French government awarded her a Legion of Honour for services to French music.
