3 July @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm AEST

A series of free and interactive Sunday afternoon classical music concerts. The perfect pairing of J.S. Bach and other masterworks in the verdant surrounds of the Royal Botanic Gardens. Join us on the first Sunday in May, June, and July at 3pm to discover a world of musical treasures and spectacular aquatic delights. Starring Australia’s leading classical artists and freelance musicians from ensembles such as the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra and Pinchgut Opera. These matinee concerts are family friendly and have a 40 minute running time.

Melissa Farrow (traverso flute)
Based in Sydney, Melissa has a very active and fulfilling career as a period flautist, recorder player, and teacher in the Australian early music scene. She has been Principal flute of The Australian Brandenburg Orchestra (ABO) since 2003, and a core member of the Australian Haydn Ensemble (AHE). In late 2019 she joined four other colleagues from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, to form Notos Wind Quintet, Australia’s premier historical woodwind quintet. In 2021 She formed Notturno, an ensemble with a core of flute, viola and guitar/lute, largely performing music of the Classical and Romantic eras

Melissa performs and records regularly with Pinchgut Opera and the Orchestra of the Antipodes and has performed with many groups including Ironwood, Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO), Latitude 37, The Marais Project, The Australian Romantic and Classical Orchestra (ARCO) and Luduvico’s Band.

Melissa is lecturer in period flute at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and has a busy private teaching studio in Sydney for early flute and recorder, and also enjoys teaching baroque style for modern flute.

Simon Martyn-Ellis (lute)
Simon Martyn-Ellis began playing the lute after finding the classical guitar repertoire too restrictive for ensemble performance: continuo collaborations remain a mainstay of his activities.

Simon returned to Australia in August 2019 after 17 years abroad, having lived and worked in first Germany for a decade, and then the United States. Intensely grateful for his experiences, he looks immensely forward to working with past, present and future colleagues from home and around the globe. You can hear him working within Pinchgut Opera, Latitude 37, the Australian Haydn Ensemble, Van Diemen’s Band, ARCO, Salut! Baroque, Ensemble Galante, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and Duo Corbetta, along with other small but special collaborations.

His particular interests are in vocal works, either in opera or intimate recitals, baroque and romantic guitar repertoire, and finding the groove in Early Music. But really, he just has a great time making music with people, exploring the diversity and richness of the sounds of plucked strings from the 16th to the 19th Centuries.
