Victorian Opera: Galileo
20 December 2023 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm AEDT
Richard Mills signs off after 10 years at the helm of Victorian Opera conducting his brand-new opera exploring the life and times of the Renaissance polymath Galileo Galilei. Born the son of a famous Florentine lutenist, Galileo developed the telescope, discovered the moons of Jupiter and was involved in various cutting-edge scientific and astronomical theories until falling foul of the Catholic Church and forced to recant. Samuel Dundas stars in incoming VO Artistic Director Stuart Maunder’s production. The score sees Orchestra Victoria collaborate with 16th-century music specialists La Compañia, while the visual storytelling is enhanced by filmmaker Jamie Clennett.
Limelight Editor’s Choice
Faith, knowledge and power collide in this brand new opera by Richard Mills that examines the fortunes of one of the world’s greatest thinkers.
A complex life which came into conflict with the political and religious powers of the day, Galileo is a searching meditation amidst questions of faith in a violent, hostile and uncertain world.
Told through a collaboration with filmmaker Jamie Clennett (The Who’s Tommy), the combined forces of La Compañia and Orchestra Victoria, and starring Victorian Opera favourite, baritone Samuel Dundas as Galileo — this project will celebrate the artistic legacy of Richard Mills while welcoming Victorian Opera’s new Artistic Director, Stuart Maunder as director.
