Violist, conductor and tech aficionado Aaron Wyatt has a lot of skills at his disposal. When approaching a new work, it’s about “choosing the right tools for the right job,” he tells Limelight.
A Noongar artist, Wyatt made history as the first Indigenous conductor of a state orchestra when he took the podium in 2022 to lead the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra through Deborah Cheetham Fraillon’s Long Time Living Here. He also developed the Decibel ScorePlayer, an iOS application from Decibel New Music Ensemble that allows the live playback of graphically-notated scores, and received a Helpmann Award nomination for his Music Direction of Cat Hope’s opera, Speechless.

Wyatt also has an upcoming world premiere in the Canberra Symphony Orchestra’s Red Desert Sand on 22 June. His work, The Coming Dawn, forms part of a program of works exploring the colour red and the Australian desert.
