March 19, 2020 was supposed to be a night of nights at the Eternity Playhouse in Sydney. Darlinghurst Theatre Company was kicking off its 2020 season with a new production of A Chorus Line, directed and choreographed by Amy Campbell. Not only was it the biggest production the company had ever undertaken but it was the first time that a professional Australian production of the iconic musical would feature entirely new choreography.

Audiences at the four previews had been ecstatic. But COVID-19 had arrived in Australia. The artistic team kept their fingers crossed that the opening night would go ahead but it wasn’t to be. The performance had to be cancelled, and the season was over before it had begun.

“Oh, look, last year was tough for everybody,” says Campbell when asked how she felt.
