For five years, Gippsland-born Anna Melville worked in Sydney as Head of Programming at the Australian Chamber Orchestra. Her impressive CV also includes stints at London’s Barbican Centre, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Victorian Opera. Now she has a new role as Head of Artistic Planning at the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, one of the UK’s most prestigious ensembles and currently on a high under the inspirational Music Director Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla. As England gradually opens up and the arts return for audiences in concert venues, Limelight caught up with Melville to talk about her time in Sydney and her hopes for the future.

How did you manage the logistics of a change of job in these challenging times?
After the ACO, I spent six months as an Artistic Programming consultant for the MSO before taking up my new role with CBSO. I started with them from Melbourne in January, working remotely and at nights to be on the same time zone as my new colleagues until moving to the UK in mid April.
