Opera Australia will give Puccini’s classic a contemporary makeover for 2014’s Handa Opera season.

It’s been touted for months but finally it’s official. Madama Butterfly, Puccini’s classic tale of love and loss, will be the next Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour, playing for a three-week season in 2014.

In a break from tradition though, this production is set to get a contemporary makeover courtesy of Spanish iconoclasts La Fura dels Baus whose bold and striking take on Verdi’s Un Ballo in Mascheraruffled a few traditionalist feathers when seen in Sydney and Melbourne earlier in the year.

Opera Australia Artistic Director Lydnon Terracini is clearly delighted to have director Alex Ollé and his team back in 2014: “La Fura dels Baus are a creative powerhouse and we are thrilled about the spectacular new production that they are creating for Handa Opera”, he said. “We have some superb international singers joining us for what has become the cultural event of the year.”

The lead will be taken by Japanese soprano Hiromi Omura who scored a great success in the role for Opera Australia in 2012. She will alternate with Korean soprano Hyeseoung Kwon who is about to appear in the Melbourne Ring....
