Fiona Allan has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer at Opera Australia. She is currently the Artistic Director and Chief Executive of Birmingham Hippodrome, a position she has held since 2015, having previously worked as Chief Executive of Leicester’s Curve Theatre, and Artistic Director of the Wales Millennium Centre.

After 17 years in the UK, Allan is happy to be returning to Sydney, where she was born. She replaces Rory Jeffes, who announced his intention to leave OA in February, but who will continue as CEO until Allan arrives in November.

She joins the company at a perilous time in its history, with the vast majority of its performances in 2020 and 2021 cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions. 

“I am coming in with my eyes open. I realise it has been an incredibly challenging time over the last 18 months, with a second big closure now, but it’s really no different to what we’ve been having in the UK,” she tells Limelight.
