When did you decide that music might be helpful in healthcare?
Music has always been part of my life. My parents had classical music on in the background much of the time and my four siblings and I all had music lessons. When my own children camealong, I encouraged their love of music. In 1998 I was working as a doctor in a busy and stressful paediatric cancer department. I had a sudden realisation that music, which was so much part of the fabric of my home life, was missing at work. I ran an idea past some of the patients and their families that music might help to soften the hospital environment and reduce their stress and anxiety. The families were enthusiastic and helped me set up the Hush Foundationwith the aim of transforming healthcare experiences through specially composed music.
