Do you ever have that feeling that life is getting more complicated? I had it the other day as I filled out my online safety induction for the Sydney Opera House. I was returning for another season of Great Opera Hits for Opera Australia and had to pass the induction to be allowed on the site. This never happened even ten years ago – you’d just turn up and they’d give you a security pass and off you’d go to sing or dance, but now as a ‘contractor’ I need to be aware of the all the hazards that lie waiting for me in the Central Passage. I had to click on various pictures of men falling over in hard hats so that I knew the dangers of working with heavy machinery in the bowels of the building. The fact that I have never driven a forklift truck, let alone in the Sydney Opera House, was lost on the designers of this one-size-fits-all festival of box-ticking.
