Sorry to darken the mood, but the most memorable images over the past couple of months have not come via streaming TV but the daily updates of the horror in Ukraine. In ten years, assuming we’re still alive, these are the first things we’ll recall whenever someone mentions early 2022. 

This raises the question, what kind of images and stories do we want to view when not being confronted by massacres of civilians? For the first few weeks I became obsessed with viewing, on my phone, video clips of the war featuring news updates and analysis from various international military and political experts before realising I needed a break. 

Many will welcome the chance when seeking their domestic arts and entertainment to switch to something lighter and merry, if only for the sake of sanity. I note the second season of Bridgerton has arrived with an almost uncanny sense of timing, and though I haven’t watched more than a snippet, I was so dazzled by the colour of the costumes and production design of what I did watch that for a moment I wondered if Netflix had updated its service to a higher...
