The West Australian Symphony Orchestra (WASO) has opened applications for the role of Assistant Conductor for 2022.

The successful applicant will assist WASO’s Principal Conductor Asher Fisch throughout the 2022 concert season, as well as working with guest conductors, and will receive one-on-one masterclasses with Fisch.

However in acknowledgement of the ongoing uncertainty caused by COVID, this time around the orchestra is only accepting applications from WA residents.

“It’s really just a very practical decision,” says Evan Kennea, WASO’s Executive Manager of Artistic Planning. “It’s not as if we only wanted West Australians to be able to apply – we are looking for the best assistant conductor we can, the best Australian applicant. But we are still in COVID times, and there are still border closures, and travel bubbles that open and close very very rapidly.”
