Formed in 2006 while they were students at the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy in Romania, the Arcadia Quartet has built a formidable reputation as one of the finest ensembles around. “This is wonderfully imaginative playing,” wrote Warwick Arnold for Limelight on their 2018 Chandos debut double CD of the Bartók String Quartets. “The expansive tempi allow room for savouring some extraordinary textures and sonorities, letting sounds resonate and hang in the air.” Now they have turned their attention to the complete quartets of Polish-Soviet composer Mieczysław Weinberg to stunning effect. Clive Paget caught up with violist Traian Boală to discuss the resurgence of interest in this extraordinary Jewish composer and the Arcadias’ second volume in what will be a six-volume series.
