The Green Room Awards, Melbourne’s annual peer-presented theatre awards, were held last night at Melbourne’s Capitol Theatre. Foregoing traditional categories last year to recognise works produced within the limitations of the COVID-19 pandemic, the awards returned to traditional categories for this year with nominations covering both 2021 and 2022.

The biggest winner of the night was The Wedding Singer, the pop musical based upon the 1998 Adam Sandler movie. The production by David Venn Enterprises, which played in Melbourne in February this year, took out six awards in the Musical Theatre categories: Best Supporting Artist for Kirby Burgess, the Betty Pounder Award for Original Choreography for Michael Ralph, Best Direction for Alistair Smith, a joint win for Best Design for both Costume (Kim Bishop) and Lighting (Declan O’Neill), and Production of the Year. Yve Blake’s musical Fangirls was recognised for New Australian Writing for Music theatre.

The Opera categories saw another tie, this time with soprano Vida Miknevičiūtė and tenor James Egglestone winning Outstanding Performer...
