The full program launches 5 July but Brisbane Festival is already announcing that it will host the world premiere seasons of Bananaland, a new musical comedy created by Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall (Muriel’s Wedding), and a new work by Brisbane company shake & stir, Tae Tae in the Land of Yaaas!

Playing in QPAC’s Playhouse from 16 September to 1 October, Bananaland tells the story of Ruby, the 21-year-old frontwoman of an unintentionally hilarious protest band, Kitty Litter, for whom obscurity knocks. That is, until a scheduling foul-up puts the spiky band on stage in front of a sold-out audience… of small children.

One of Kitty Litter’s song connects hard and before long, the band have a big decision to make: continue to pursue an anti-establishment line, or turn themselves into a poptastic entertainment troupe for an adoring following of under sixes.

Bananaland reunites Miller-Heidke and Nuttall with director Simon Phillips, who helmed the musical adapatation of Muriel’s Wedding to its acclaimed debut in 2017.
