Entire neighbourhood shows up for concert after garden sign goes viral.

Dylan Spoering, an eight-year-old in Minneapolis, Minnesota, has made headlines after a piano concert held on his front porch attracted an audience of over 200 people.

Spoering initially advertised the concert with a hand-written sign on his front lawn that said ‘Free concert by Dylan Spoering, 2:30-3:20pm.’ Public interest was sparked by local musician Thomas Rehbein, who, on his cycle-route home, photographed the poster and created a Facebook page for the event.

“I have no idea who Dylan Spoering is, but he made this sign and put it out in his front yard, which I saw while biking home,” Rehbein wrote on Facebook. “Wouldn’t it be cool if a bunch of people showed up for his free concert?”

The event quickly went viral, and, despite wet weather, people attended the performance in their hundreds. Many concert-goers made signs to show support for the young pianist, labelling themselves ‘Dylan Heads’. In addition, the event was streamed online with over 10,000 people tuning in.

Perched on the porch with a keyboard hooked to a Fender PA system, Spoering began the concert at 2:30pm sharp. After performing several pieces from his elementary piano book, including Rhino in the Mud and Skip to my Lou, Spoering began to interact with the crowd: “How long do you think I’ve been practising?” he asked. One person joked, “15 years!” to which he replied “I’m only eight!”

Handing out cookies and answering questions in a brief intermission, Spoering later stood and yelled into the microphone, “I am the King!”

With the overwhelming success of the event, Spoering is already planning his next big concert on Saturday, August 2. Same time, same place.
