The 2022 nominations for the annual Tony Awards, recognising achievement in Broadway productions, were announced last night by the Broadway League and American Theatre Wing. This is Jackman’s second nomination for Best Actor in a Musical, having won in 2004 for his performance as Peter Allen in The Boy from Oz. Jackman also received a special non-competitive Tony award in 2012 whilst performing in the concert production Hugh Jackman: Back on Broadway.

Jackman’s was one of six nominations The Music Man received, alongside his co-star and fellow Tony-winner Sutton Foster who was nominated for Best Actress in a Musical. The revival itself, which was coldly received by critics when it opened in February this year, was nominated for Best Revival of a Musical.

Leading the nominations this year was the new musical A Strange Loop which received 11 nominations in total (Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Actor, Best Actor in a Featured Role, Best Actress in a Featured Role, Best Scenic Design of a Musical, Best Lighting Design of a Musical, Best Sound Design of a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical and Best Orchestrations), after winning the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2020. The Lehman Trilogy received the most nominations in Play categories, including three Best Actor nominations for its three central performances (Simon Russell Beale, Adam Godley and Adrian Lester).

Elsewhere, actress Patti LuPone received her eighth nomination for her performance in the current, gender-flipped revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Company, which received nine nominations in total – including Best Revival against The Music Man.

The musicals SIX and Girl from the North Country, which will be familiar to Australian audiences with national tours currently underway, both received noms for Best Musical. Girl from the North Country received a total of seven awards, and SIX received eight.

The Australian tour of Girl from the North Country will continue performances in Melbourne on 12 May, after being hit by COVID related cancellations after opening at the Comedy Theatre on 29 April.

The 2022 Tony Awards will be presented on 13 June. The full list of nominations can be found at
