Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s new Chief Conductor Jaime Martín has announced the orchestra’s 2022 season – his inaugural program in his new role.

The season comprises more than 110 performances, with music by 15 Australian composers featuring in the main series – among them Anne Boyd (who celebrates her 80th birthday in 2022), Miriam Hyde, Margaret Sutherland, Anne Cawrse and Brett Dean. There are also six commissions, five world premieres and two Australian premieres, as well as a continuing engagement with First Nations artists and culture.

Over 20 conductors and directors will lead concerts, among them Vasily Petrenko, Sir Andrew Davis, Tan Dun, Alpesh Chauhan, Xian Zhang and Nodoka Okisawa in her Australian debut, while 20 visiting international artists include Sheku Kanneh-Mason, James Ehnes and South Korean pianist Yeol Eum Son making her Australian debut.

Meanwhile, Christian Li, the Melbourne-based, teenage violin sensation, who recently recorded his debut album for Decca with members of the MSO, will join the Orchestra as Young Artist in Association for 2022.
