Queensland based music industry development association, QMusic, which oversees the contemporary music industry in the state, has announced that outgoing Brisbane Powerhouse Artistic Director Kris Stewart will take over the role of CEO. The appointment comes after Angela Samut stepped down unexpectedly from the role after just two years.

In-coming QMusic CEO Kris Stewart

Stewart takes on the role after serving eight years as Artistic Director of Brisbane Powerhouse, the contemporary performing arts precinct. During his tenure, he brought about a 91 per cent increase in the programming of local or Queensland-based artists, solidifying the centre as a cultural hub for the state. Last year, Brisbane Powerhouse was one of the first Australian venues to re-open after the COVID-19 pandemic, hosting the Queensland Ballet, QSO, and QMusic.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time at Brisbane Powerhouse but my background in festivals and major events means I’ve been hungry to get my hands dirty again and events such as BIGSOUND and the Queensland Music Awards take me back to what I love,” Stewart said.
