Sydney Theatre Company has chosen Ian Michael as its 2022 Richard Wherrett Fellow.

The Fellowship, which is named after the STC’s founding Artistic Director Richard Wherrett, offers an emerging theatre director the opportunity to gain experience and mentorship over the course of a year while employed by STC.

Michael, who is a proud Noongar man, graduated from the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). He has since worked as an actor, director and writer for performing arts companies across the country including Black Swan State Theatre Company – where he was a Resident Artist from 2018 to 2020 and Artistic Associate in 2021 – Ilbijerri Theatre Company, Malthouse, Melbourne Theatre Company and Yirra Yaakin.

At STC, he worked as Assistant Director on Kip Williams’ adaptation of The Picture of Dorian Gray in 2020 and as Assistant Director to Shari Sebbens for The 7 Stages of Grieving in 2021.
