On 20 October 1973, the Sydney Opera House celebrated its official opening with a grand gala. In a year-long lead-up to its 50th anniversary, celebrations will begin this October and culminate in October 2023.

The Sydney Opera House has announced the first lineup of events, which will showcase the best of contemporary culture from Australia and overseas. NSW Arts Minister Ben Franklin unveiled the program of more than 230 performances and events, which will take place both inside and outside the Opera House – on the famous sails, on the Forecourt, inside the theatres and online. Some events will be free to the public, while others will be cheaply priced in order to entice a broad audience.
