Season Preview: Your guide to the arts in 2023

Artistic Director Aurélien Scannella has unveiled the West Australian Ballet’s 2023 season, his 10th with the company. For Scannella, it is a dual celebration, having recently been decorated a Chevalier de l’Ordre de Léopold (Knight of the Order of Leopold) by the Royal Family of Belgium – the country’s oldest and highest honour.

In making the announcement, Scannella said, “I’m proud to have been Artistic Director of this versatile, ambitious and historic company for 10 years. As in each year of my tenure, I hope that audiences see our great creativity and world-class technical standards in each and every performance.”

“2023 will be a year of innovation and intrigue, with a deeply emotional and historical story and many of WA’s favourite choreographers returning with great new premieres.”

Scannella ranks among them and, to mark his anniversary, he will join Artistic Associate Sandy Delasalle in creating the pas de deux from Sylvia, based on Louis Mérante’s 1876 original for the Palais Garnier with music by Delibes.
