A virtuoso trombonist, prolific composer and busy conductor, Christian Lindberg is a regular and welcome visitor to Australian shores. This time it’s virtually, in the form of The Waves of Wollongong, one of three terrific (and sometimes terrifying!) large-scale orchestral works by Lindberg featured on his latest recording entitles 2017.

The title work is where the terrifying comes in (it’s also last in the program), being Lindberg’s “testimony” of the first full year that followed Donald Trump’s becoming president of the United States. However, there’s plenty of drama before that: Lindberg is an eclectic and always accessible (in the best sense) composer, but he likes to shake things up a bit with crunchy dissonances, unusual colours and triple-forte tuttis.
