In the 1970s, Sony produced a series of LPs of music by black composers, a long overdue tribute to their work. One who did not appear in that series had an added difficulty to overcome: she was female. Still, her musical talent took her as far as a premiere with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (of the First Symphony, in 1934). This was Florence Beatrice Price (1887-1953), born in Little Rock, Arkansas. She completed three symphonies, No 2 being lost or unfinished. A revival of interest in her work has seen newly discovered concertos for violin (two) and piano recently appearing on disc. This is the second recording of her Symphony No 1, and the premiere of No 4.
