If you’ve previously enjoyed the music of Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin, you may expect much exquisiteness from a new release, which is precisely what ARIA-winner Katie Noonan and Camerata deliver here. From the first pizzicato notes and the pure operatic tones of Katie Noonan unravels a journey of lush forests, friendship, and granted wishes. If you’re a listener who enjoys to visualise through music, this may satiate your imaginative heart. Much of the music is instrumental and teeming with life; the performers of Camerata play masterfully and maintain this spirit throughout. Similarly, the recording is clear and seamless. When the enchanting Noonan does sing, she entices us to wander alongside her.

The album is the musical realisation of an Australian children’s book by Annie R. Rentoul and Ida Rentoul Outhwaite; the Queensland Music Festival commissioned it in 2011, and again as a co-production with Queensland Ballet in 2019. While there may be no illustration or stage production to accompany this recording, the music in its raw form is nevertheless spellbinding.

Standout movements for me include the lulling Waking from the Dream and Hush-a-Bye Possum; and the arresting Butterfly and the Little Green Road. I’d implore you to discover your own.
