Resound is a – yes – resoundingly optimistic view of where we find ourselves now. Back in the theatre, for one, without audience limits, check-ins and, for most patrons, no masks. As Sydney Dance Company Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela said in his pre-show chat at the 29 October matinee, there is hope after the darkness and turbulence of recent times.

The first and third works on the Resound triple bill travel dramatically through that turbulence to reach a state of calm and possibility. Fasten your seatbelts for the timely revival of Bonachela’s Ocho, which could have been choreographed yesterday, and Stephanie Lake’s new The Universe is Here.

Lake is a big get for SDC, particularly this year. She premiered Manifesto at the Adelaide Festival in March (it’s travelling to most of the country’s main arts festivals) and the extraordinary Biography for Queensland Ballet’s Bespoke program in July.
