Brooding, dramatic sounds of Spain filled this concert with musical sketches of a renowned and romantic part of the world. Celebrated for its collaborative and inspired performances, the Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO) jazzed things up in its latest concert Sketches of Spain.

Alongside Richard Tognetti, who directed as well as playing violin, were Matt McMahon on piano, Phil Slater on trumpet, Brett Hirst on bass, Jess Ciampa on drums and the ACO players.

Beginning with two movements from Debussy’s Images pour orchestre – Ibéria and Par les rues et par les chemins (abridged) – this arrangement by Rofe set the tone for a high-energy concert. The quality and dynamic of sound created by the ACO showed why they are world-renowned. The subtle and individual colours coming from the orchestra were simply outstanding. Such is their ability that it’s possible to make out each line of music coming from individual players, even though there were more than 20 on stage. In between playing, Tognetti led with his bow in a passionate performance by everyone.
