I think a lot of classical performers could learn a thing or two (or three) from soprano Eva Kong. This was a hugely enjoyable gig that absolutely did not fit into what we expect from an opera singer, but, after all, where’s the fun in being predictable? If I had to try and squeeze the show into one box, I suppose you could argue it was close to a jazz gig, but what made this so effective was the fact that the performers (Kong, jazz singer Asabi Goodman and accompanist Andrew Fincher) were all so relaxed onstage and clearly enjoying themselves. Let me put it this way – when was the last time you saw any classical performers genuinely laugh?

There’s also something to be said for taking classical music out of its usual concert halls.
